Joseph LARMARANGE PhD in demography

Course and current status

Joseph Larmarange (PhD) is a senior demographer at IRD (French research institute for sustainable development), attached to Ceped (UMR 196 Centre for Population and Development, Université de Paris, IRD, Inserm). He is the head of the research team “Health, Vulnerabilites and Gender relations in the global South” (SageSud, ERL Inserm 1244). He is also the co-president of the scientific section on public health and social science (CSS 144) of the ANRS (French research agency on HIV, viral hepatitis and emerging infectious diseases).

Scientific summary

Over the last 15 years, he has been working mainly on HIV in Western and Southern Africa, specifically on HIV testing and new prevention strategies, in the general population or among key populations.

He is currently the principal investigator of the ANRS 12381 PRINCESSE study implementing sexual health mobile clinics (including PrEP and HBV management) targeting female sex workers in Cote d’Ivoire. He is also the scientific coordinator of the Unitaid-funded ATLAS project aiming at promoting and distributing HIV self-testing kits among key and vulnerable populations in Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal.
