Zein Assad is a pediatrician specialized in infectious diseases. He worked as a fellow within the pediatric infectious disease unit at Robert Debré University Hospital in Paris, and in the department of pediatrics at Cayenne Hospital in French Guiana.
His research focuses on the epidemiology of pneumococcal diseases and viral respiratory infections in children, as well as modeling the impact of immunization programs on these infections.
During his Master's in Public Health at the Pasteur-Cnam School in Paris, he gained expertise in evaluating the impact of public health interventions using the interrupted time series analysis method. By applying this statistical approach, he assessed the impact of the implementation of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in France on the incidence of respiratory infections in children with sickle-cell disease, a population particularly at risk for pneumococcal infections.
In 2024, Zein Assad was recipient of a research grant from the Foundation for Medical Research (FRM) for this PhD in clinical epidemiology at Pierre Louis School of Public Health (ED393), Paris Sorbonne and Paris Cité University. The aim of this PhD is to model serotype replacement following the implementation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, in order to guide future vaccination programs.
This PhD is conducted within the EPIC (Reducing the burden of Pneumococcal disease In Children) team, led by Prof. Naïm Ouldali and affiliated with IAME research Unit (INSERM UMR 1137) at Sorbonne University and Paris Cité University.
