Kamel MOHAMMEDI is Professor of Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine of Bordeaux (University of Bordeaux, France) and physician in the Endocrinology, Diabetology and Nutrition Unit of the University Hospital of Bordeaux since 2017. He has been Head of the Diabetes Unit since 2020.
Kamel graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Oran (Algeria). He completed his clinical training in endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition in Paris (France). He worked for more than ten years as an endocrinologist at the Bichat Hospital (Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, France). He holds a Master's degree, a PhD and an HDR (Habilitation to conduct research) from the University of Paris. He worked as a PhD student and researcher at INSERM (French Institute for Health and Medical Research) Unit 695 (Paris 2009 - 2012) and UMRS U1138 (Paris 2014 - 2015). He spent a research year at the George Institute for Global Health (Prof. John CHALMERS, Sydney, Australia, 2015 - 2016). He has also been a visiting professor at McMaster University and the Population Health Research Institute, Hamilton, ON, Canada (2022 - 2023).
He has 15 years of research experience in clinical, epidemiological and genetic areas with a focus on diabetes-related vascular complications, including kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and peripheral arterial disease. He has been principal investigator (or coordinator) of a number of national and international randomised clinical trials and observational prospective cohorts. He has been supported by several grants from the French Ministry of Health, the Francophone Diabetes Research Foundation, the Francophone Diabetes Society and the Aide aux Jeunes Diabétiques association. He has published around 145 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He is an Associate Editor of the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology (IF 9.3), and is regularly invited as a reviewer for major journals in the field of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He also has extensive experience in undergraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision and mentoring.
